Fumiaki Aono

Fumiaki Aono

Born in Sendai, Miyagi, 1968; lives and works in Sendai. Since 1991, Aono has consistently pursued the underlying theme of "Mending: Regeneration and Circulation." By collecting discarded objects, debris, and fragments from vacant lots, coastlines, and urban spaces, he uses their missing parts and traces of former use as clues to "mend" and restore them. Through joining and recombining disparate items, he confronts the memories of others, bestows new forms upon these materials, and seeks to draw out the lingering spirit embedded within each object.  Around 2004, he began expanding his practice to include "Mending and Substitute Assembly," utilizing mass-produced items such as readymade furniture. Having personally experienced the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, Aono shifted his focus intensively toward "mending" objects damaged and broken by the tsunami. Through this practice, he pursues a concept of "Comprehensive Restoration" —a multifaceted approach incorporating disaster, history, locality, memory, and narrative.
